Google Looses Gamer Genius Mark Deloura. Bad Timing.

The Google Gaming scene is a happening one. But this time, we receive  not so good news from this front. With the launch of Google Chrome Web Store right around the corner, Mark Deloura game developer advocate has announced his departure from Google. DeLoura  says the reason for leaving Google is basically that “[Google job] was not the perfect fit”. He is yet to disclose his future plans. However, he has expressed his appreciation and excitement about the ongoing projects and direction of Games at Google in his blog.

Analysts see this as a major setback for Games at Google :

DeLoura is the second high-profile developer advocate Google has lost this Summer. Last month, Android developer marketing lead Sun Hu Kim jumped ship to join Twitter.

The loss of DeLoura seems particularly notable, though, as Games at Google is still a big, unfulfilled promise. From a social software, developer community and technical perspective, not to mention profit, Google is getting ready to make a big push in gaming. Google invested more than $100 million this Summer in Zynga, makers of Farmville and other mind-numbing fare, for example. Rallying and supporting a thriving developer ecosystem, the job DeLoura was hired for, will be key to the larger gaming effort.

As Google seeks rapid development around a possible game platform to compete with Apple and Facebook, the loss of high profile execs in this department makes us wonder at potential issues taking place behind closed doors.  Google’s recent series of acquisitions, along with its Android platform and overall desire to exceed in the entertainment space, means the company has some reflecting to do, and some changes to make.
