Good Tech lets IT track and bill smart phone usage by the app

smartphone shopping appsIn a bid to reduce the IT department’s burden of juggling personal and corporate data plans, Good Technology Inc. is offering a new service that attaches billing controls to individual applications. The launch takes aim at the same problem that BlackBerry Ltd. has targeted with its acquisition of Movirtu Ltd. in September.

Half of organizations that support bringing personal devices into the office leave employees to foot at least some of the bill for their work-related calls and data consumption, a phenomenon stemming in large part from the sheer complexity of mapping out mobile activity across an entire workforce But increasingly strict regulation is forcing companies to change their ways.

Managing employee data usage not only requires determining how much each and every worker consumed in a given month but also providing reimbursements and reporting on that usage. The technology BlackBerry obtained as part of Movirtu enables companies to create multiple numbers on the same device to separate personal and business activity, but still necessities some manual intervention.

Good says it has gone one better with its new service, which makes it possible to embed billing controls into individual applications so that employees only charge the organization for authorized work. The company said the functionality also improves morale by giving workers the peace of mind to engage in deeper conversations with peers and prospects because they’re not worrying the bill.

Good Data originally implemented the feature in its collaboration service last year and realized that third party applications could benefit. The standalone solution is available immediately for limited deployment with support for both Android and iOS.
