Info leaked for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, spoiling Square Enix’s livestream event
When Square Enix kicked off a three-day interactive livestream leading up to a big announcement from one of its Western developers, fans almost immediately began speculating that the new game could be the next entry in the Deus Ex franchise. Now, a series of leaked images and a Game Informer cover have confirmed the new game, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.
The images came from a leak on a Russian website, and they were later posted to Neogaf. According to some of the images and a rough translation of the text from the Russian site, the new game will feature Adam Jensen, the protagonist from 2011’s Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which was a prequel to the earlier Deus Ex titles.
Deus Ex takes place in a cyberpunk future where the rapid rise of human augmentation faces a backlash from “purists” who believe that humans should not replace parts of their anatomy with machines. In Human Revolution, Jensen was an ex-cop running security for a human augmentation company. Jensen’s body is virtually destroyed in a violent attack on the corporate headquarters, and he is rebuilt as a part-machine super soldier. If it sounds a little familiar, the game creators did admit to taking some inspiration from Robocop. Did I also mention the first act of the game was set in Detroit?
So far, official details are sparse regarding Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and Square Enix have yet to confirm the title. Meanwhile, Game Informer went ahead and announced that its May cover would be featuring the game and provided a bit more information on the story and setting.
According to Game Informer, Jensen returns in Mankind Divided to lead an Interpol-sponsored task force in hunting down augmented terrorists who make it harder for the general public to accept augmented humans. Jensen will have a new suite of augmentations that include better stealth and combat, as well as new abilities, such as remote hacking, shields and more.
Despite the leak, Square Enix is still going forward with its Project CantKillProgress livestream, which currently has a few hours left. Maybe next time the studio will realize that three days is a bit too long for the impatient Internet.
