Report: Path in talks with Kakao Talk to sell social networking app Path Classic

Path ClassicPath Inc. is reportedly in “serious talks” with South Korean messaging app KakaoTalk, regarding the acquisition of their social networking app Path Classic, according to sources familiar with the deal who spoke to Re/code. Even though Path is San Francisco based, they never had much luck with Path Classic in the U.S. On the other side of the world in Indonesia, it is a different story. The company currently has 30 million active users majority of who live in Indonesia, but have failed to monetize the app.

Terms of the deal between Path and KakaoTalk are unknown, but provide KakaoTalk’s parent company, Daum Kakao Corp. the ideal position to break into messaging market in the largest country in Southeast Asia. With a population of 250 million, a large percentage of Indonesia’s population is very active on mobile and social apps, notes Re/code.

If the acquisition of Path Classic goes through, sources close to the deal say that Path would continue to operate independently.

Dave Morin, former Apple and Facebook Inc. employee launched Path in 2010. Path was an alternative to Facebook; however, they limited the number of friends to a maximum of 150 so that you were more selective. Just a few months after launching they were reportedly offered $100 million for the company by Google; however, they turned it down. Since then their products have changed, and they have become more of an app studio.$100 million for the company by Google; however, they turned it down. Since then their products have changed, and they have become more of an app studio.

In June last year, Path introduced a new messenger app called Path Talk. The app allows you to communicate easily with friends, family and co-workers. However, in September they introduced the ability for Path Talk users to message their local businesses, allowing users to make appointments or reservations or inquire about additional information.

Last week, Path also released Kong, an app that allows users to create selfie GIFs and share them with their friends. The app also allows users to share more than just a selfies, adding the ability to add text, effects and filters to GIFs. Path has also created a version of Kong for the Apple Watch, so users will see notifications of new posts on their wrist. Kong is currently only available in the U.S. on both Android and iOS.
