Wikibon: Systems of Intelligence will underpin data-driven business #HadoopSummit

A new kind of application, called Systems of Intelligence, is evolving to provide real-time data analysis to support business decision-making on a micro-scale, writes Wikibon Big Data Analyst George Gilbert.   Amazon.com and Google provide early examples of these systems, which are already changing customer expectations of service.

Watch Gilbert in action on theCUBE from Hadoop Summit 2015.

Systems of Intelligence are growing out of Systems of Engagement in early adaptor businesses today. They combine data from both Systems of Engagement and Systems of Record and use machine learning to anticipate the wants of individual customers, much as Amazon automatically provides book and music selections to customers based on what they have purchased previously. However, says Gilbert, this new class of applications should not be seen as limited to customer analysis. It has a major role to play in analyzing Internet-of-Things (IoT) and other types of Big Data as well.

In some early adaptors, line-of-business executives are driving the development of this new class of applications. However, that does not exempt IT executives from responsibility for their success. IT organizations will be strategic partners in building and managing the radically new infrastructure that will support these systems.

Systems of Intelligence will support entirely new business models and methods of achieving competitive advantage, Gilbert writes. On the business side, they will push responsibility for pursuing new business initiatives and implementing supporting technology further out into the organization. On the technology side, the core foundation will be focused more on data than on the data management software itself.

Gilbert promises that Systems of Engagement will be a major focus on Wikibon’s Big Data sector resource going forward. His full alert is available on Wikibon Premium.
