Me too: Facebook adds photo to video making feature to Moments app

Facebook, Inc.’s Moments application has received a boost with a new version now allowing users to make movies from their pictures.

Facebook Moments originally launched in June and allows users to organize and share snapshots by using facial recognition to recognize photo subjects, or as Facebook described at the time a private way to share photos to friends and get the photos you didn’t take from big events like weddings and concerts.

The addition of video has been described elsewhere as a minor addition, but one that could make the app more compelling for those who didn’t find the sharing features provided by Facebook Moments all that interesting.

Facebook Moments creates a music video for any grouping of six or more photos, with users then being able to customize the video by changing the included photos and selecting from a range of background music tracks.

The video, naturally, is then able to then be simply shared on Facebook with friends, along with automatic tagging of people in the video so they’ll know you’ve uploaded a video with them in it.

Yawn

The feature may be appealing to those who equate the internet to being Facebook, and hence don’t understand that there are other social networks and apps other than those provided from the house Mark Zuckerberg allegedly stole from the Winklevoss twins, but for everyone else we’ve seen this sort of thing before.

Google Photos is the obvious provider of a service that offers photo to video creation, but there are a number of other players as well, such as Flipgram and even Apple’s iPhoto desktop application providing similar functionality.

That said, Facebook is playing a wide game when it comes to app development, launching multiple apps that do different things in an attempt to provide all things to all people, but unlike some other services, not all forced and bundled into a single application.

Facebook Moments is, without question, easy to use, and maybe it might seriously take off now with the new video feature; only time will tell.

Facebook Moments is available for both Apple, Inc.’s iOS, and for Google, Inc. powered Android mobile phones and tablets.
