Painful irony: DDos protection provider suffers data breach
It would be a painful irony for a company specializing in cyber security to get hacked. While that may be the case for Staminus Communications, it focuses on providing protection against DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks, rather than the hack that targeted it, so now its sensitive data has been leaked.
The Staminus network, which hosts several websites, recently went offline, reportedly due to a data breach. Shortly after, the hacker released 15GB of stolen data, including customer credentials, credit card numbers, and an array of sensitive or personal information.
However, it has not been revealed what caused the leak, but it’s theorized that the main goal was to target a known hate group that hosts its website through Staminus. Staminus customers are recommended to change their passwords immediately and keep an eye on their credit card activity.
This stands as a warning that one can never be too prepared. Staminus undoubtedly has safeguards in place, but a hacker still managed to get by. Admittedly, as it’s made to protect against DDoS attacks, customers can still rest assured that DDoS was not the cause.
