Is an on-prem stepping stone the cure for public cloud jitters? | #CloudWorld

Despite the hype around public could, some companies are still reluctant to make the move off-prem with all that’s at stake. Others cannot move to the cloud for legislative reasons.

Swamy Kuppuswamy, director of system integrations, analytics, data science and enterprise data management at Avaya, Inc., said that, happily, the complexities of moving to cloud are being broken down for customers by companies like Oracle. Kuppaswamy said that Avaya has a long relationship with Oracle and is in the process of moving to the cloud with them currently.

Kuppaswamy spoke to John Furrier (@furrier) and Dave Vellante (@dvellante), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, about the process his and other companies face when making the transition. “To move to the cloud, first of all, you need to have a single operating environment converging all your various landscapes to one platform or suite so that it will be easy to flip it to the cloud,” he said.

The stepping stone

Kuppaswamy said that Oracle Cloud Machine, the new at-customer cloud service that allows the customer to stay on-prem, introduces a great way fom jittery companies to get their feet wet. Staying on-prem at first, “You can make sure you’re not going to miss anything when you move to the cloud,” he said. Once that’s established, you can then flip it all to the cloud with peace of mind.

“It’s definitely visionary to see the cloud on-prem,” Kuppaswamy said. He said that companies need a stepping stone to move to the cloud, and, “Maybe Cloud Machine is the first one to look for. Make sure you don’t miss anything when you move to cloud, and then the next step, you’ll move to the cloud,” he said.
