Big Data platform customization key for businesses | #HS16Dublin

In the Big Data world, performance is everything. It’s not just about collecting more data, but also understanding the information and finding the value in it. Even by the standards of the tech world, Big Data technologies are changing quickly to meet this goal. As new sources of information and new types of data come online, this rapid change continues with no end in sight.

To get some insight into the new promise of Big Data performance, John Furrier (@furrier) and Dave Vellante (@dvellante), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, spoke to Steve Sarsfield during the Hadoop Summit in Dublin. Sarsfield is the product marketing manager of Big Data at Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. (HPE).

A conversation with data

The conversation started with a look at HPE’s own Big Data offerings. Sarsfield pointed out that the company’s staff had been developing a Big Data platform for many years, and it was necessary for them to make the platform bulletproof and enterprise grade.

The value proposition, he said, was that a company can run queries so much faster than before; they can have a conversation with their data. This was a very big differentiator, and things that are hard to accomplish on other platforms are easier on HPE’s system, he said.

Old, new and AI

The old way of doing business is to have a static server with separate storage and compute. People want more out of their architecture these days, he continued. For a company, being able to customize what they buy is key with Big Data.

Customers want to look at three kinds of data: customer data, Internet of Things data that comes in huge amounts, and human-generated data like voice, video and audio. That third type of information is hard for tradition analytics to handle, so that’s becoming the domain of Artificial Intelligence systems. Companies want to adopt the latest tech to solve the latest problems, Sarsfield said.
