Apple counter-sues Motorola for intellectual property infringement. This soon-to-be court fiasco is a testament that mobile wars are intensifying to the tune of patent legal battles. Clearly, they are trying to hinder each other in all aspects as they every company desires to own and dominate the mobile phone space.
Apple recently sued another mobile/electronics giant Motorola for infringing numerous and distinct patents of their multi-touch display interface and technology. This move by Apple may also be triggered with the hype of the word war between the two companies.
The one at the middle of this lawsuit is Motorola’s Droid handset. This has attracted the fury of Apple with purportedly “obvious” infringements on Apple’s iPhone multi-touch interface. Apple also noted in their complaint the details of the technology “copied” by Motorola.
Before all of these conflicts surfaced, Motorola and Apple once enjoyed a harmonious association. It is not a secret that Motorola contributed in building the processors of Apple’s Power PC-based Macs. Moreover, they collaborated with Apple to assemble the very first “iPhone”—Motorola Rokr with integrated iTunes prop up.
Reports have mentioned that this counter-charge was brought about by Apple’s growing concern about Motorola phones being released in the market that have been challenging iPhone. In an interview, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook said, “We like competition, as long as they don’t rip off our intellectual property.”
To document on-going legal cases filed: Apple is suing all 3 mobile makers Motorola, HTC and Nokia for trademark breach and infringements. On the other hand, Apple is facing charges filed by companies like Nokia and Kodak.
Motorola has vehemently denied allegations by Apple and defended itself dynamically. See here for more details on the legal course between Apple and Motorola.
