Google’s Project Fi expands international coverage with Three

Project Fi, Google’s pay-what-you-use cellular service, has just gotten a huge boost in international coverage thanks to the addition of Three to its list of network carriers.

Project Fi does not use its own cell towers. Instead, it takes advantage of other cell networks, including T-Mobile and Sprint. Google added US Cellular to its network earlier this year, expanding its coverage in the US, and now the addition of Three will offer better support overseas.

“When you’re traveling abroad, your phone is an essential tool – for finding a great restaurant, posting pics of your trip online, or translating a sign,” Tyler Kugler, a product manager for Project Fi, wrote in a blog post. “But the data we have access to when traveling abroad often isn’t fast or affordable enough to let us do the tasks that matter most. Which could be why only 20 percent of Americans opt to use their cellular data when traveling internationally, instead choosing to jump between Wi-Fi hotspots or scramble for a local SIM card.”

“Starting today, all Project Fi subscribers have access to high speed data in 135+ destinations. With the addition of Three to the Project Fi network, we’re now able to deliver speeds 10-20X faster than before. And, just as before, there are no extra fees for using data internationally – you pay the same $10/GB that you do at home.”

According to Kugler, Project Fi is now available in over 135 destinations around the world, and he says that Project Fi now offers high speed data in 97 percent of the places Americans visit internationally.

Google initially launched Project Fi as an invite-only pilot program in April 2015, later eliminating the invite requirement in March 2016. Currently, Project Fi is only available on the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, and Nexus 6P, and Google has made no promises to ever support any non-Nexus devices in the future.
