Developer Preview, version 5, for Android N is available and will be the final preview before the official launch of Android Nougat in the summer. Android users can expect a wide range of new features from Android Nougat, including advanced Doze mode, bundled notifications, improved security, and more.

If you are enrolled in the Android Beta Program, you will receive the latest Developer Preview as an over-the-air update.

Here’s a look at the availability of Android N as well as the new features revealed in the last Developer Preview.

Android Nougat availability

While Android Nougat will be available later this year on the 2016 Nexus smartphones, it may be a while until you can download it on your Android device.

Nexus phones that will be upgraded to Android Nougat include the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P and likely the Nexus 9 as the Developer Preview is available for it. The same goes for the Pixel C and Nexus Player.

Third-party manufacturers will start rolling out Android Nougat upgrades slowly, but any devices launched at the end of 2015 or this year will likely receive the upgrade. This includes the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S7, LG G5, and HTC 10.

Android N Developer Preview 5 features

Quick Settings toggles for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi fixed

In Developer Preview 5 when you tap the Quick Settings toggles for Bluetooth or Wi-Fi you will turn it on or off. This is a fix from the previous Developer Preview, which would bring up a option to choose a network or device when you tapped the toggles.  

Google Camera updated with new features

The Google Camera, previously on version 3.2 has been updated to version 4.1 in Android N Developer Preview 5.

• Zoom-in animation when viewing previously taken photos.
• Timer, HDR, and Flash toggles expand when tapped to show buttons that are the width of the device.
• When an HDR photo is being processed, a new spinner will display.
• The Google Photos icon is replaced with an All Photos icon in the camera roll.
• Settings redesign places all options in the main screen.
• By default, the volume button acts as a shutter button, but in Developer Preview 5 you can change the volume button to act as a zoom button.
• Manual exposure controls, added in Developer Preview 3, have been removed.

App Info details installation

When you scroll to the end of App Info, you will now be able to see where the app was installed from, i.e. the Play Store, a third-party app store, or through the Package Installer.

Updated Easter Egg

As this is the final Developer Preview of Android N there is also an updated Easter Egg in version 5. Unlike previous Easter Eggs, you will actually turn this one on or off. In Android Lollipop and Marshmallow, users got a version of Flappy Bird, but the latest Android operating system offers users a built-in version of Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector.
