The feature that has been around from the start has been removed from iOS 10. When you download the latest operating system in September, or if you have already downloaded the public beta, the missing ‘Slide to Unlock’ prompt will be the first thing you notice, or rather lack thereof.

Rather than sliding to unlock, users will now need to push the Home button, which will allow you to access the new features like Raise to Wake, widgets and more.

New features of the iOS 10 Lock screen

Lock screen notifications

Simply picking up your iPhone running iOS 10 will instantly turn on your device and you will be able to see any Lock screen notifications The functionality is known as Raise to Wake and will allow you to view the time and pending notifications without having to press a button.

When your device wakes up you will see a lock icon to indicate that your iPhone is still locked. To unlock your iPhone press the Home button and type in your passcode on the screen. If you have Touch ID enabled, press the Home button with your registered fingerprint to unlock your iPhone.  

Access your widgets

iOS 10 adds the ability to access various widgets by swiping right on either the Lock screen or the Home screen, where you will find the widgets in the Search screen. Current widgets include a News widget that will show you top news headlines, or you can see what events are scheduled for today, or what appointment you have up next with the two Calendar widgets. The Notes widget will show you recent notes that you have created while you can also create new notes, reminders, etc. You are also able to control music with the music widget, get weather updates and more.

Left swipe for the camera shortcut

Accessing the camera shortcut from the Lock screen has moved. Previously you accessed it by swiping up from the bottom right-hand corner, now you access it by swiping left on the screen.

To close the camera app and go back to the Lock screen, simply press the Home button.   

Continuity app shortcut stays the same

One Lock screen feature that has remained the same is accessing the Continuity app shortcut. Located in the bottom left-hand corner, the shortcut will allow you to launch content from other devices.

Unlock your iPhone the old way

If you have an iPhone 6s or 6s Plus and would prefer to revert back to using Touch ID to unlock your device and bypass pressing the Home button, simply change this setting on your iPhone.

Open the Settings app on your iPhone > General > Accessibility > Home button > enable the Rest Finger to Open feature.
