AWS adds SaaS subscriptions option to its marketplace

Amazon Web Services has made a new store on the AWS Marketplace where customers can buy Software as a Service and Application Programming Interface products.

The new AWS Marketplace Vendors program allows customers to buy up products and services as they need, and pay for the time or data used instead of being charged a recurring fee. The cost of using those products and services will then be tacked onto their monthly AWS account bill, with Amazon passing the balance for the SaaS services over to the developer. AWS didn’t mention if it will take a slice out of those costs as a service charge.

“The new SaaS solutions run on AWS infrastructure and you will pay only for the service that you consume, with no monthly fees or subscription costs,” AWS evangelist Jeff Barr said in a blog post. “For example, you can buy security services on a per-host basis, log processing on a per-GB-ingested basis, geocoding on a per-request basis, or caching on a per-GB-cached basis. Usage charge for the services that you consume will appear on your AWS bill.”

The new program is clearly a bonus for companies that sell their wares on AWS, as it means they’ll have more access to the cloud giant’s customer base. AWS pitched the service as helping developers save time and reduce the complexity that comes with juggling various accounts and services. Meanwhile, by giving customers the option of paying for SaaS services by the amount of data or time used, it should increase the uptake of third-party services, Amazon said.

Currently, AWS is offering 24 products from 21 different companies, and plans to add “dozens” more in the coming months.

Also yesterday, AWS said it had moved its QuickSight analytics business intelligence tool out of beta and into general availability. QuickSight, first introduced in 2015, allows customers to analyze data generated by their use of AWS instances and export that data to be crunched by other popular analytics tools, including Microsoft’s Excel and Salesforce.com.

QuickSight is available now, with pricing starting at $9.00 per user. For more information on how to get started with it, check out SiliconANGLE’s comprehensive guide here.
