GlobalSign brings high-volume security certificates to Internet of Things

Internet security and trusted identity certificate provider GlobalSign announced today that the company has launched its Managed Public Key Infrastructure Platform as a commercial service. With the capability to output certificates in large volume, this new platform can support the security needs of Internet of Things networks at scale.

As a certificate authority, GlobalSign manages and provides the security keys used to encrypt internet connections between devices, servers and services, such as those used for web services via the Secure Sockets Layer protocol, which is used to protect web traffic for credit card transactions, online banking and so forth.

Since IoT devices, both consumer and industrial, often need to “phone home” over the Internet, the data needs to be protected from prying eyes. IoT networks also need a way to verify the identity of devices connected to the network in order to prevent intruders from sneaking in and providing bad information.

“With a unique strong device identity, things can authenticate when they come online, ensure secure communication between other devices, services and users, and prove their integrity,” GlobalSign said about its PKI platform for IoT.

The company’s engineers have been working for two years getting the platform prepared for the Internet of Things by building up its ability to issue certificates at scale. In 2014, GlobalSign had a single datacenter with the capability to handle tens of requests per second. As of December, GlobalSign reached thousands of certificates per second, and today that number has reached more than 3,000 per second.

According to GlobalSign’s high-volume certificate fact sheet, the system has a large variety of use cases including for industrial IoT, developers and manufacturers of IoT devices, e-commerce, email providers and document workflow management.

Developers and businesses can tap into the PKI platform to integrate with the most common IoT platforms via standardized application programming interfaces and join the IoT Development and Technology Partner ProgramOrganizations interested in partnering with GlobalSign can find details on the company’s website.
