Celebrity advice for women in tech: On the ground at PBWC 2017

The celebrity-packed, 28th annual Professional BusinessWomen of California Conference takes place today in San Francisco.

The non-profit organization has brought in well-known faces, from Hillary Clinton to Rosario Dawson, spanning the business, political, entertainment and sports scenes in a broad appeal, encouraging STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) programs for girls and women. With the theme of “Inclusion Now,” PBW is itself a picture of acceptance, given its diverse lineup of speakers and panels.

SiliconANGLE will be at the PBWC Conference with exclusive interviews from its streaming video news desk, theCUBE.

Women are increasingly climbing the corporate ladder; however, they continue to face constant challenges, including the fight for equal pay and bias in the workplace. “Still more needs to be done for changing attitudes of organizations and specifically tech companies in supporting women,” said Dave Vellante, co-founder and chief research officer of the analyst group Wikibon, owned by the same parent company as SiliconANGLE.

The high-profile case of Uber Technologies Inc., currently facing sexual harassment allegations from a former engineer, demonstrates the challenges still plaguing the workplace.

Working as a woman in any industry can be difficult, but attempting to break into the technology or science sectors can be incredibly daunting; men significantly outnumber women in office settings. Tech is a crucial field for women as the threat of automation in the workplace leaves women worse off than men, according to a report from the World Economic Forum. Being underrepresented in the very economy driving automated software and machines leaves women with less job opportunities in fields related to STEM fields.

Even when diversity is attempted in the workplace, programs are often driven by the mostly “white boys club,” a situation that is not helpful in a global business culture. Women made up only 25 percent of computing-related jobs in 2015, according to a report from the National Center for Women and Information Technology (PDF download). However, within this group is a vast lack of diversity, with only five percent of the jobs held by Asian women, three percent by black women and one percent by Latina women.

Many organizations, including Women Who Code and CloudNOW (Cloud- Network Of Women) are working hard to help women take their place in technical fields and connect women in cloud.

Keynote speakers at the PBWC Conference include Hillary Rodham Clinton, former Secretary of State; Memory Banda, Malawian advocate for girls and civil rights; and Libby Schaaf, mayor of Oakland, California.

Other speakers include Lareina Yee, senior partner at McKinsey & Company Inc.; Nandita Bakhshi, president and chief executive officer of Bank of the West Inc.; and Lynne Twist, president of the Soul of Money Institute and co-founder of Pachamama Alliance.
