The Angle on Big Data

Before we head off to Santa Clara to cover the 2011 O’Reilly Strata Conference, I thought it would be a good idea to revisit some of over previous “big data” coverage for those of you who may have missed it.  I’ve compiled a quick montage of some of our most poignant bits, along with some quick analysis for each.  Be sure to check back here for our live coverage of Strata 2011 starting on February 1.  See you at the show!

Clip #1: Kevin Weil from Twitter on Hadoop and Big Data

Our Angle: we talked about, before it entered the enterprise, the concepts of big data as applied to social platforms like Digg, Facebook and Twitter. At Hadoop World in 2010, we discussed how the Hadoop and hBase is an essential component to getting a handle on Big Data. Expect to hear plenty about Cloudera, Hadoop and hBase at the Strata conference.

Clip #2: Tim O’Reilly at Hadoop World on Defining Terms and Seeing them Play Out

In this clip: Tim talks about how Big Data is filling out his vision of what “Web 3.0” originally was.

Our Angle: We’ve been talking about the latent power in big data for years, just as O’Reilly staked out the term “Web 2.0,” we share his joy in seeing things play out as we thought they might.

Clip #3: Marco Pacelli with Dave Vellante at the Boston Studio

Our Angle: We agree with Marco: Big Data without insight leaves data value-less. Marco explores this with Dave as he explains the work that Clickfox does.

Clip #4: Abhi Mehta at Hadoop World

In this clip: Abhi describes what he calls the “next industrial revolution,” with a concept he calls “data factories.”

Our Angle: Leveraging quantitative reasoning, essentially artificial intelligence, is the only way to bring value from the data. This requires fast storage, the ability to sift through semi-structured and unstructured data, and massive development chops.

Clip #5: Joe Tucci at EMC Megalaunch

In this clip: Joe Tucci describes the new “texture” of Big Data.

Our Angle: EMC has been hinting around at the coming datastorm since EMC world in 2010, where Joe Tucci’s keynote focused on the petabyte scale storage problem. EMC officially acknowledged big data at the Megalaunch with their 41 announcements
