Scale the Cloud, Reach More Partners: GoToCamera Aims to Become a Data Market

The cloud’s benefits lie in its ability to provide a series of services, chopping down overhead for launching new businesses.  It’s an opportunity to creatively approach an interest of any sort, and inspires many to be resourceful with the options laid before them.  That’s certainly been the case for Varun Arora, the man behind GoToCamera.

GoToCamera is a webcam security provider, with a deliberate and dedicated desire to make its services as accessible as possible.  This takes two main things into consideration: easily-implemented technology and affordability.  It’s because of the cloud that GoToCamera is able to deliver a product around these objectives, which anyone could then use for their own purposes.

GoToCamera offers a flexible solution to webcam security, leveraging existing webcams that you probably already have.  That webcam that’s been sitting in your junk drawer for the past eight years, the webcam on your laptop, or even the camera that comes with your smartphone.  I’m betting you have a discarded smartphone lying around somewhere—and it’s probably not even two years old.  Arora is betting on this two, eliminating the technology and cost barriers in one swoop.

Providing a free service is also a big part of Arora’s drive towards accessibility, giving users the basic functions of GoToCamera at no charge.  You won’t get streaming video security, but you can time out your snapshots at custom intervals, and receive updates via email.  Every connected camera comes with its own feed, so you’re able to create a personalized security system around the devices and technology you already use. Should you want things like streaming video security, GoToCamera’s premium option is still affordable, resting under $30 per year.

While GoToCamera offers a premium option, the ability to use its service for free is a central aspect of what Arora is trying to do.  Living in Singapore for several years, he found that many people need security monitoring for basic things, like keeping an eye on the housekeeper, which is quite common in the area.  Beyond this, a primary use of GoToCamera is actually keeping an eye on pets, seeing which ones are eating, and at which time (or if it was the cat or dog that always tips over the trash can).

The cloud has enabled a great deal of scalability for GoToCamera to be able to do this, but Arora is finding the industry is ripe for partnership opportunities.  “We have a good relationship with Oracle and other cloud companies,” Arora tells me, saying there are “many things we’re doing now to become available from as many places as possible.  We’re seeking partners that have access to the end user.”

The cloud partnerships are certainly a strategic way for GoToCamera to push ISP adoption, carving out a direct path to reach customers through broadband services.  Turns out, these customers are itching for an affordable home monitoring system through their internet providers.  It’s also an opportunity for GoToCamera to begin gathering and delivering more data points around the security information its collecting, which can be of huge benefit to end consumers as well.

“Data analysis is something we’re very interested in,” Arora concludes, “in working with partners and adding new features and services, making this easier, more affordable and scalable.”
