With $20M in new funding, OpsRamp sets out to automate hybrid clouds

As cloud adoption continues to widen, administrators must balance the requirements of the new off-premises applications their companies are deploying with the infrastructure that still runs in-house. OpsRamp Inc. has carved out a niche for itself by helping to automate the task.

The three-year-old startup, which was bootstrapped up to this point, today announced that it has secured a $20 million investment from Sapphire Ventures. That’s an usually large sum for an initial funding round. Then again, OpsRamp is much better established than the average startup raising its first outside capital infusion.

More than 1,400 organizations, including Toyota Motor Corp. and Dolby Laboratories Inc., rely on OpsRamp’s cloud-based platform to manage their infrastructure. The cornerstone of the service is a centralized monitoring feature that the startup says can map out the different components of a company’s environment, as well as track how they run. A set of administrative controls enable operations teams to apply this information in several areas.

OpsRamp can be used to check how well an application meets availability and performance expectations, as well as troubleshoot any potential issues. A complementary policy engine lets administrators set up automated workloads to handle maintenance tasks.

A user could, for example, configure OpsRamp to go through a preprogrammed list of remediation steps in case an application goes offline. The platform’s automation features also lend themselves to more mundane activities such as performing backups. OpsRamp generates periodic reports about operational activity and important changes to help administrators keep track of what’s happening in their environments.

The startup will use today’s funding to build more features for the platform and step up customer acquisition efforts. As part of the push, OpsRamp plans to place a particular focus on recruiting more channel partners, which are an essential part of any growth strategy in the infrastructure automation market.
