Google adds a new security center for G Suite software users

Google LLC wants to help enterprises using its productivity tools to improve how they protect themselves from cybersecurity threats, and to that end it rolled out a new Security Center today for its G Suite product.

G Suite is a collection of cloud computing, productivity and collaboration tools for enterprise customers that’s designed to compete with Microsoft Corp.’s Office suite, combining products such as Gmail, Hangouts, Calendar and Google Drive. Google said more than 3.5 million organizations have adopted G Suite so far.

Now the search giant is adding a new security center that provides users with security analytics, actionable insights and best practice recommendations, so they can better protect themselves from hackers and take action in the event of an attack.

The security center provides a snapshot of the most important security metrics in one place, Chad Tyler, a product manager at Google’s Security Center, said in a blog post. With this, admins can quickly see which users and devices are being targeted and by what methods, and work out how to defend them. The security center also provides more detailed analytics, for example providing visibility into which users are being targeted for so-called “phishing” attacks, which involve sending an email with a link to a fake website that’s designed to steal passwords and other login details.

Not least, he security center provides recommendations for admins. It works by analyzing an organization’s existing security posture to detect for weaknesses, before offering customized advice on how to plug those holes. The recommendations cover issues such as how data is stored, how files are shared and communications and mobility settings.

Google said the new security center will roll out in the next few days. While they’re waiting for that, admins can follow these instructions on how to get started.
