Google Play Instant allows users to try games before buying them

“Try before you buy” is coming to the world of Android games, with Google LLC launching a new feature that allows games to be run without the need for them to be downloaded.

Called Google Play Instant, the feature adds a “Try Now” button to supported apps that, as the name suggests, allows a given user to immediately try out the app. The idea being pushed by Google is that by easily allowing users to try a game without a download, they would be more likely to purchase it.

“We want to make discovery easier and remove friction during the install process,” a Google spokesperson told by 9to5Google. “Installing and opening a game takes time and results in many players never getting to experience your game.”

Google launched support for instant apps at the I/O conference in 2016, although with a focus on allowing users to show content from an app without the app being installed. The process used deep links that pull the content requested from within the app out, allowing users to see it instantly.

The next iteration takes that concept a step further by focusing on games in particular, a category of apps not previously supported.

As part of the launch, Google has redesigned the Google Play Games to include a page dedicated to games supporting instant play as well as adding an “Instant Gameplay” tab to the supporting app. Starting today, games that support the feature include Clash Royale, Final Fantasy XV: A New Empire and Panda Pop among others.
