VMware Delves into Tablet Game, Brings Windows to iPad

Pitching into the iPad game, VMWare has launched an app named “VMWare View” that will allow users, especially enterprises to run Windows on iPad. This enterprise-focused iPad App was released today and will let users to access virtual Windows network, company servers and network using iPad. It means that iPad will soon become a part of corporate enterprises on a massive level as it allows access to Windows-based corporate systems. Won’t that be cool?

Explaining its new app, VMWare writes,

“iPad users will feel right at home interacting with their View desktop using the gestures we’ve implemented making it easy to do things like click, select, drag and invoke the soft keyboard.  We’ve also included support for Bluetooth or dock connected keyboards for those prefer to type on a physical keyboard.  In addition to keyboards we’ve also added support for the iPad VGA connector which will let you connect your View desktop to an external monitor or projector.  If you wanted to, you could realistically go iPad full time!”

The introduction of VMWare View’s app removes the barriers that stopped iPad from entering the enterprises and becoming an active member. With this app, the much-loved iPad will be easily adopted by enterprise markets.

While this is a good sign for VMWare’s future in iPad market, Samsung lost its favor from Apple by losing the deal to supply Cupertino’s A5 processor. Earlier we heard from Korea Times about Apple receiving 5,000 application processor sheets per month from Samsung but now Korean firm TSMC may now make the A5 processor of iPad 2. Although we are hearing the rumors from the last two months, the deal still remains unconfirmed.

Besides this, VMWare is making several other developments including acquisition of WaveMaker, an open-source web apps outfit. Around 18 months ago, it acquired SpringSource, an ecosystem in which WaveMaker is already a fixture.  WaveMaker is compatible with Windows, Mac OS and Linux-based operating systems. It allows the users to load apps to a cloud-based system on different platforms.  We recently spoke with Rod Johnson, founder of Springsource, on cloud trends and VMware’s long term goals around the deal (see here for full interview at TheCube).

“This acquisition furthers VMware’s cloud application platform strategy by empowering additional developers to build and run modern applications that share information with underlying infrastructure to maximise performance, quality of service and infrastructure utilisation,” said Rod Johnson, the former SpringSource man who now serves as senior vice president of VMware’s application platform division.

Just yesterday, VMWare also launched its new vCenter Operations as an effort to take its IT services to the next level. This new cloud solution strategy is believed to be automated by analytics to work for today’s dynamic virtual and cloud environment. It will offer three editions; Standard, Advanced and Enterprise.

Leaping back to the mobile market, VMWare also unveiled a mobile virtualization platform for Android that will allow the employees segregate their personal and corporate profiles on the same device. The platform was launched by the company during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on LG Optimus Black.
