AT&T and Google team up to deliver high-speed public cloud connectivity

Wireless service provider AT&T Inc. said today that it’s collaborating with Google Inc. as it looks to build a more robust portfolio of cloud services.

First up, it’s getting more closely involved with Google’s expanded Partner Interconnect service. That program, which offers business enterprises a more secure way of connecting to its public cloud platform, is one of three options besides a regular public connection. Other options include connecting via Cloud Virtual Private Network or through Google’s Dedicated Interconnect service.

Last month, Google said it would be teaming up with several internet service providers to give customers a new option to connect to its cloud privately, even if those ISPs are geographically distant from the nearest Google Cloud Platform region. Essentially, Google is offering a private, high-speed connection that bypasses the public internet, providing security and reliability advantages.

Businesses can now use AT&T’s network to connect to GCP via its NetBond for Cloud service, which allows customers to move workloads across multiple cloud environments while bypassing the public web.

“We’re committed to helping businesses transform through our edge-to-edge capabilities,” said Roman Pacewicz, chief product officer for AT&T Business. “This collaboration with Google Cloud gives businesses access to a full suite of productivity tools and a highly secure, private network connection to the Google Cloud Platform.”

Besides the new Partner Interconnect service, AT&T will also offer Google’s collaboration tools, known as G Suite, to customers via the AT&T Collaboration service. What that means is that G Suite users can benefit from “carrier-grade voice reliability and security,” the companies said.
