AWS, VMware partnership expands hybrid cloud solution for both public and private sectors

The early days of server virtualization posed challenges around transitions to management processes, with particular difficulties among industries with strict regulations like government and healthcare. In an effort to remove these delays to workforce transformation, VMware Inc. and Amazon Web Services Inc. has expanded its a partnership to development an advanced hybrid cloud solution for both the public and private sectors.

“To get those workloads moved is heavy lifting,” said Lynn Martin (pictured), vice president of government, education and healthcare at VMware. “The flexibility of the VMware Cloud on AWS … is really being able to take that software layer and being able to move much faster.”

Martin spoke with Dave Vellante (@dvellante) and Stu Miniman (@stu), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the AWS Public Sector Summit in Washington, D.C. They discussed AWS and VMware’s product announcement and how the partners hope to impact the market with their innovative solution. (* Disclosure below.)

Building cloud synergy

The latest offering from VMC and AWS allows both commercial and government entities to better leverage the VMware suite of product sets currently running in their data centers to more efficiently migrate workloads to the cloud, according to Martin.

“We call it hybrid cloud technology, utilizing the tools of the software-defined data center … and giving you the flexibility and agility to move workloads in and out as you need for your business demands at a high level,” Martin said.

Customer concerns around velocity, efficiency, and — most importantly for the public sector — security, have so far slowed transformation efforts for many, but VMware’s expansion of its existing platform means a more seamless transition and minimal learning curve, Martin added.

“One of the biggest benefits today is that your talent is already trained on the VMware tools. … Those same computer operators that run the VMware environment can now run your cloud environment,” Martin stated.

VMware also announced its intent to enter into the FedRAMP process jointly to ensure the highest level of security for its customers. While VMware and AWS support a range of verticals, increased levels of protection rooted in federal regulations provide a greater level of protection for all, Martin pointed out.

“You can take the same processes and things that we put together and applied for federal and state and local, and then apply it to the healthcare market. … We see a lot of great synergy,” Martin concluded.
