Data protection unicorn Rubrik Inc. today introduced a major new release of Datos IO, the backup platform that it acquired just six months ago to move into the lucrative NoSQL database market.
Enterprises have in recent years significantly expanded their use of NoSQL databases to accommodate the rapid growth of unstructured information. Many of those new deployments are running in the public cloud. To better address this use case, Rubrik has added software container support to Datos IO.
Software containers are a popular means of deploying applications, particularly cloud applications, that enable code to be moved across different types of infrastructure with relative ease. The technology is also quite resource-efficient. According to Rubrik, Datos IO now works with containerized NoSQL deployments and can itself be packaged into a container to ease deployment.
The integration promises to simplify operations in another way as well. When deployed as a container, Datos IO may be managed using popular container orchestration frameworks such as Kubernetes.
The other major focus of the update are the platform’s core data protection features. Rubrik has added the ability to restore entire databases at once after an outage, along with an “express recovery” capability aimed at enabling companies to recover large volumes of information faster.
The features are joined by more specialized enhancements targeted at deployments of MongoDB, the most popular NoSQL system on the market. Rubrik said that it has retooled Datos IO’s underlying architecture to support large MongoDB environments with upwards of hundreds of nodes. Moreover, it promises simpler backups for deployments in which data is updated at a frequent rate.
Lastly, Rubrik is bringing the platform to additional public clouds. The startup has made Datos IO compatible with Microsoft Corp.’s Azure and Oracle Cloud to give companies more deployment options. Plus, Rubrik is expanding the existing support for Amazon Web Services by making Datos IO available as a prepackaged Amazon Machine Image that speeds up the initial setup process.
