The catastrophe that hit Japan has virtually all kinds of casualties, more notably lives. It would take months, if not years of recovery before the affected area can get back to its feet. Those who have survived the earthquake, as well as those outside the country, have been making efforts to help the country recuperate from the disaster. Among thousands of kind-hearted people who is doing their share in the rehabilitation, Softbank founder and CEO Masayoshi Son stands out. During his visit in Tamura, one of the cities gravely affected by the nuclear blow, he decided to cover the living costs of the area, which include commute and food, for a year, as well as offered some 1,200 jobs in Takeo, Saga.
The philanthropic act doesn’t stop there. Son is also utilizing his “Let’s Do It” campaign site on Twitter to increase efficiency in donating, thus, building up more help for the victims. It publishes up-to-date list of item shortages in the evacuation centers. Another thing about Son is what he did when a follower of his suggested that he should provide orphans free phone credits while on recovery so they can contact their friends and family members. Son retweeted the suggestion and instead of just free phone credits, he decided to give free phones to orphans with call costs waived till the child is 18. He also offered to replace lost and damaged iPhones. How generous is that?
All help given to Japan, no matter how small, is worth thanking. However, a man with a heart as big as Son is exemplary. And once again, social media has proven itself to be a powerful tool in a difficult time as it allows people to continue communicating even if major carriers are suffering from significant damages.
