From ship to shore to cloud, NetScout offers visibility without borders

Among the customers served by NetScout Systems Inc., provider of application and network performance management products, is one of the largest cruise line companies in the world. Cruise ships today are floating information technology operations with bow-to-stern wireless connectivity, digital signage, and entertainment services tracking.

The travel services customer relies on NetScout’s nGeniusONE platform and Adaptive Service Intelligence technology to provide its IT staff with network availability and visibility that can be effectively managed at sea and on land.

“What they have is the visibility from ship to shore to cloud,” said Russ Currie (pictured), vice president of enterprise strategy at NetScout. “We’re trying to provide visibility no matter where you are deployed.”

Currie spoke with John Walls (@JohnWalls21) and Rebecca Knight (@knightrm), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during AWS re:Invent in Las Vegas. They discussed how NetScout differentiates itself from competitors and the company’s philosophy of network visibility regardless where systems are deployed. (* Disclosure below.)

A painless single pane

Visibility is a key element for most IT organizations as companies increasingly move into hybrid models that combine data stored on-premises and in the cloud, along with critical information generated at the edge. NetScout operates in a competitive landscape, where multiple vendors promise enterprise-level visibility through single view technology.

NetScout has sought to differentiate itself from the pack by concentrating its tools at the data source. “Often when people try to get to that single pane of glass, they end up with more of a single glass of pain,” Currie said. “They are trying to aggregate so much stuff, it really doesn’t come together well. But because we focus on the data source itself, then it provides continuity regardless of where they deploy.”

This form of barrier-free oversight has been recently captured by NetScout in the tagline for a marketing campaign used extensively during the AWS re:Invent gathering in Las Vegas last month: “Visibility Without Borders.” The company is emphasizing its ability to keep IT personnel informed on all elements of network monitoring and security in complex hybrid environments.

“It’s really about meantime to knowledge,” Currie said. “You want to ensure that you are actually getting what you pay for, you want to have those controls in place that you know what you’re delivering is meaningful and impacting the business in a positive way.”
