Virginia Gets Virtual: Local Library Turns To Pano Logic for Virtualization

Education defines character and builds nations. And, when you fuse education and information technology, you get learning at its finest. Furthermore, most academes clinging to tech updates look for the following: efficiency, simplified management system, cost savings and improved security. This is what the award-winning library in the city of Staunton in Virginia is gazing at with the help of Pano Logic Zero Client Computing.

City of Staunton CTO Kurt Plowman explains their current challenges lying within the technical boundaries and manpower saying, “Our resources were stretched thin, so spending several hours a week fixing software problems and replacing parts was becoming a never-ending nightmare. The public library was overdue for a solution, so we turned to Pano Logic desktop virtualization to centralize endpoint management, meaning we don’t ever have to leave our offices to update software or repair hardware.”

Staunton replaced its desktops with the Pano system installed. The solution is a union of the features like zero client desktop virtualization hardware with server-side software that operates on top of the hypervisor, connecting the display, input devices and other USB peripherals to the desktop virtual machine. Especially during the recession in 2009, steady increase in foot traffic at the library and the facility’s aging and problem-plagued PCs were unable to keep up with the growing demand. That time nearly 50% were functioning to its full capacity.

The benefits of this move include a worry-free staff that no longer has to trouble-shoot, zero-maintenance trips, a more secure environment to protect against malware and virus, remote upgrades for devices without having to manually update each one (frees up loads of staff time!) and security for each device. Being a leader in desktop virtualization, Pano Logic enables system management to be done centrally, through desktop computing from the server and setting reboot schedules.

The trend has spanned across the globe and even the National Library of Finland clamored digitizing of documents and records. With opportunities within cloud and big data environment, library apps and universities are great starting points for aspiring developers.
