BIG DATA

Tibco Software buys SnappyData for real-time analytics on Apache Spark

Data integration software firm Tibco Software Inc. said today it has acquired a startup called SnappyData Inc. as it looks to boost the real-time analytics capabilities of its platform.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Tibco’s main product is its Connected Intelligence Cloud, which aggregates data from various enterprise systems, devices and application programming interfaces. It also provides business intelligence tools to analyze this data.

With the acquisition, Tibco gains an Apache Spark-based, in-memory cluster that adds real-time capabilities to its BI tools. The combination will enable it to provide “live analytics on data in motion and at rest,” Tibco co-founder and President Richard Lamb said in a statement.

The company reckons that combining its software with SnappyData’s will ensure a 20-times performance boost compared to native Apache Spark deployments.

SnappyData came into being in 2015 after being spun out of Pivotal Software Inc. It sells a high-performance in-memory data platform based on Spark that’s designed for mixed workload applications. Its platform further incorporates GemFire, which is a distributed data management platform used in high-volume, latency-sensitive, mission-critical, transactional systems.

SnappyData’s platform is also said to complement Apache Cassandra, which is an open-source NoSQL database that enables it to tap into Spark streaming data in real-time.

SnappyData’s platform is primarily aimed at “internet of things” workloads and similar use cases.

In a 2017 interview on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE’s mobile livestreaming studio, SnappyData founder and Chief Technical Officer Jags Ramnarayan called the company’s offering a “single data store that’s capable of taking Spark streams, doing transactions, providing mutable state management in Spark, but most importantly being able to turn around and run analytical queries on that state that is continuously merging.”

Tibco said the acquisition would help to fill out its open source portfolio, which also includes the microservices development platform Project Flogo. The deal also makes Tibco’s software fully compatible with the wider Apache Spark ecosystem, the company said.
