Tesla Inc. announced Thursday its “biggest software update ever,” designed in part to make driving more entertaining.
The Software Version 10.0 will roll out to Model S, Model X and Model 3 cars, although those who have the fully self-driving capability in their car will get the update first.
Those updates for the most part center around entertainment for when the car is parked, with the company adding something it called “Car-aoke” for stationary hi-jinx. That’s a karaoke feature which includes a library of songs and lyrics in many languages to be sung in that style.
If that’s not enough, those models will also have options to play content from Netflix, YouTube and Hulu as well as live TV accounts. Video content will only play while the car is parked, although music streaming on apps such as Spotify will play when the car is moving.
Games will be included in the update, with the “Tesla Arcade” including the first levels of the games “Cuphead” and “Mugman.”
In addition, drivers will have “I’m Feeling Lucky” and “I’m Feeling Hungry” options thatwill choose locations for the occupants of the car. “In testing, we’ve been taken to hole-in-the-wall restaurants, gourmet meals, national parks, city landmarks and more,” Tesla said in a press release. Maps have also been updated to base search results on distance.
As for updates not based on having fun, Tesla said that for its Full Self-Driving and Enhanced Autopilot cars, it has introduced something called “Smart Summon.” Using this the owner can summon a car while it is parked. The car can drive around various obstacles, but it must be able to see the owner when it is summoned. On top of that, video recordings when the car is in “Sentry Mode” will be kept in a different folder from driving recordings.
Finally, the company has introduced a “Joe Mode,” which lowers the volume of alerts when people are sleeping in the car.
The updates will come automatically, so there’s no need to request 10.0.
