Lenovo ThinkStations get enterprise VR certification for Varjo headsets

Varjo Technologies Oy, a maker of industrial-grade virtual reality headsets, today announced a partnership with Lenovo Group Ltd., a major manufacturer of enterprise workstations that will certify personal computers made by the company for all Varjo head-mounted displays.

Varjo announced the partnership at AutoDesk University Las Vegas 2019, a computer-aided design conference. It will create “Certified for Varjo” pairings on Lenovo desktops and mobile workstations. The certification will combine the power of enterprise-grade high-end workstations and high-fidelity VR headsets, which will enable enterprise organizations to adopt and implement VR more readily.

“Our partnership with Lenovo helps drive a monumental shift in enterprise usage of immersive technologies,” said Timo Toikkanen, president and chief operating officer at Varjo. “Combining our products with Lenovo’s pioneering enterprise portfolio products into ready-made bundles eases adoption hurdles and quickly gives organizations the tools they need to start taking advantage of the many benefits of virtual reality.”

Varjo, which means “shadow” in Finnish, recently launched the VR-2 and VR-2 Pro HMD headsets, which build on previous “human eye quality” display technology from the company’s $5,995 VR-1 headset released earlier this year.

The company’s headsets are designed to provide the highest possible fidelity for VR work at resolutions that brag almost 20 times greater resolution than other headsets on the market. The HMDs also integrate high-fidelity eye tracking and tools designed to cater to enterprise workflows. As a result, Varjo headsets are used by aircraft and automotive makers such as AirBus SE, AudiAG, Saab AB, Volkswagen AG and Volvo AB.

With this partnership, Varjo believes that the combination of human-eye resolution and the high-powered capabilities of Lenovo workstations will provide the most powerful and sophisticated technologies for creating valuable user experiences for workers in these industries.

“When you’re looking for the ultimate VR and XR viewing experience, you look for the only human-eye resolution display available,” said Rob Herman, general manager of Workstation and Client AI at Lenovo. “The technology Varjo brings to the table is extremely sophisticated and requires professional workstation power to bring that clarity to life.”

The “Certified by Varjo” pairing will certify several desktop and mobile workstation configurations including the ThinkStation and ThinkPad P Series lines. The certification will also ensure the highest-quality experience for professional applications that will span across automotive, simulation, training, architectural visualization and more.
