Acquisitions fuel HPE’s latest enhancements for data protection through GreenLake platform

When Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. purchased Zerto Inc. for $374 million last year, it was expected the acquisition would result in new solutions for the data management and protection space. Those expectations became clearer on Tuesday when HPE announced new solutions for the growing data protection as-a-service market.

As part of a series of announcements this week for HPE GreenLake, the company unveiled HPE InfoSight App Insights, a new capability to detect application anomalies and provide recommendations. The company also integrated data-driven intelligence into the GreenLake platform, using InfoSight and CloudPhysics, another acquisition made earlier this year.

“As we get into this cloud operational mode, one of the things that was missing was how application workloads were going to be deployed, protected and expanded,” said Omer Asad (pictured, right), senior vice president and general manager of data management SaaS, infrastructure & HCI at Nimble Storage, a HPE company. “We expanded our InfoSight offerings by merging them into Data Services Cloud Console and we’re releasing a new service called App Insights. What App Insights does is tease apart all of that data we have been collecting with InfoSight, and now, with the acquisition of CloudPhysics, we’re merging them together for the operational stack top to bottom.”

Asad spoke with Dave Vellante, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during the HPE GreenLake Announcement event. He was joined by Tom Black (pictured, left), senior VP and GM of HPC storage at HPE, and they discussed details of the new data protection solutions and the evolution of HPE’s cloud services strategy. Protection-as-a-service

The most recent announcement includes data protection for HPE’s VMware customers, with backup and recovery service for VMware workloads.

“We’re launching data protection as-a-service or backup as-a-service for our VMware customers, offered from Data Services Cloud Console as a SaaS portal,” Asad said. “It’s 100% SaaS, with nothing to install. All that’s needed is sign on, click, give your vCenter credentials, and off you go.”

GreenLake represents a key element in HPE’s transition to a cloud services company. The platform has evolved to offer a wide range of as-a-service capabilities in keeping with customer transition from managing boxes to managing the cloud.

“You haven’t heard us talk about a box at all today; it’s about a block service, a file service, an object service, a backup and recovery service,” Black noted. “That is the language of the business problems of our customers. Cloud is more about the experience and outcome it gives a customer than actually where the compute or storage is.”
