Future of observability and application monitoring will be spotlighted during Splunk .conf21 Virtual, Oct. 19-20
Splunk Inc.’s mission is to investigate, analyze and act on data at any scale. But users must be able to observe and monitor the data they are working with, and this goes to the heart of the company’s value proposition.
Splunk makes software that analyzes server and application data to identify performance issues. Observability becomes highly important in this regard because mission-critical applications now run across hundreds of machines and opaque networks. Visibility has evolved into a requirement, and companies such as Splunk, which provide observability solutions, are becoming increasingly popular.
“Observability has become a hot segment and, at the end of the day, there’s value that’s enabled from observability,” said John Furrier, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. “Observability is at the center of all the conversations, from monitoring, investing in on-premises or cloud infrastructure, and cybersecurity. If you don’t see data, you can’t understand what’s going on; you can’t measure it. This is huge.”
Enterprise solutions for observability and analytics in a new era of cloud transformation will be highlighted during Splunk’s .conf21 Virtual event, Oct. 19-20 for the Americas and Oct. 20-21 for EMEA and APAC. TheCUBE’s event coverage begins on Oct. 19 and runs through Oct. 20. Coverage will include interviews with Splunk executives, customers, partners and technology thought leaders, focusing on new approaches for observing and harnessing data to make organizations more secure and innovative. Monitoring the digital experience
One of Splunk’s key solutions for observability involves digital experience monitoring. It is a tool designed to boost observability and rapidly pinpoint issues, from inside web browsers to backend services.
“It enables you to look at what the users’ experiences are, pull metrics and then correlate them all the way through the technical journey to the backend and through different tiers of the application,” said Craig Hyde, senior director of product management at Splunk, during an interview with theCUBE. “We also layer in synthetic monitoring, which is a sort of robot for when users are in lower-level environments and want to see what the experience is going to look like when they push out new software.”
Another important area of focus for Splunk involves the OpenTelemetry project, an open-source initiative that defines a standard for extraction of logs, traces and metric data from servers and applications that companies monitor.
OpenTelemetry is the second biggest project at the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, behind only Kubernetes, in terms of developer and company participation. Splunk is the number one corporate participant in OpenTelemetry, having made 64,000 contributions to date. Its most recent was the donation of a new eBPF packet filler collector in early October.
“I think of OpenTelemetry as finally creating a standard for how we’re collecting data from applications across APIs,” Hyde explained. “There are never any standards of how to look at transactions across data, across applications and across tiers. It’s a really important project for observability in general.”
