StormForge targets efficient approach to containerization resource management

Since becoming popular about six years ago, containerization solutions such as Kubernetes have proven indispensable for organizations that deploy their apps or have processes running in the cloud.

With moving processes to containers, however, several runaway obligations often result in overspend — and StormForge is set to solve that problem, according to Matt Provo (pictured, right), founder and chief executive officer of GramLabs Inc. (dba StormForge).

“These knobs, as you turn them, you have no visibility into the impact on the application itself,” he said. “And so often organizations are becoming more agile, shipping code more quickly; but then all of a sudden the cloud bill comes and they’ve overprovisioned by 80, 90% and discover they didn’t need nearly as many resources.”

Provo and Tom Ellery (pictured, left), senior vice president of revenue at StormForge, spoke with David Nicholson and Lisa Martin, co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during the recent KubeCon + CloudNativeCon NA event. They discussed StormForge’s approach to preventing overprovisioning and resource wastage, as well as the Kubernetes skills gap. (* Disclosure below.)

Pruning containerized workloads to be lean and efficient

As organizations move their workloads from non-containerized environments to Kubernetes, there is a myriad of features and complexities that often leads developers to overprovision by as much as 90%, according to Provo.

“What we do is we help understand the unique goals and requirements for each of the applications that are running in Kubernetes. And we have machine learning capabilities that can predict very accurately what organizations will need from a resource standpoint in order to meet their goals, not just from a cost standpoint, but also from a performance standpoint,” he explained.

Using the unique combination of technologies inherent to the StormForge platform, customers have been able to shave 40-60% off their cloud bill while increasing app performance by 30-50%, according to Ellery. In essence, its underlying artificial intelligence and machine learning help companies find a cost/performance balance on a dynamic basis.

In taking a broader look at the containerization landscape, there is a palpable skills gap, Provo pointed out.

“I think you’re going to see training and the availability for more and more developers and practitioners be adopted more widely. I also think that as the toolchain itself hardens in a containerized world, you’re going to start seeing more and more individuals who are comfortable across all these different tools,” Provo concluded.
