What to expect at HPE Discover 2022: Join theCUBE June 28-30

Enterprise cloud adoption is a done deal. Now it’s time to manage the complexities of modern hybrid computing.

Since its 2015 spin out, Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. has pushed hybrid infrastructure as a key step for successful enterprise transformation. The 2018 launch of the HPE GreenLake Hybrid Cloud solidified the company’s support of hybrid cloud as the IT environment of the future.

At the time, analyst Patrick Moorhead called the launch of GreenLake “a real moonshot,” describing the platform as “the Holy Grail for enterprises looking for multicloud solutions.” Four years on, GreenLake has become the centerpiece of HPE’s modernization platform and offers enterprise customers over 50 cloud services that cover everything from networking, data services, high-performance computing and operations management to security, backup and disaster recovery, single sign on, and customer identification. It is also the backbone of the company’s development of an abstraction layer to hide the underlying complexity of multicloud environments (AKA supercloud), according to recent analysis by theCUBE industry analyst Dave Vellante.

Speaking to Vellante about how the cloud services provided via the GreenLake platform help create an abstraction layer for customers, HPE Vice President Patrick Osborne (pictured) stated: “It’s real. We have the proof points for it.”

HPE Discover 2022, which takes place June 28-30 in Las Vegas, will bring even more additions to GreenLake’s as-a-service portfolio, according to Osborne.

“We’re going to have a set of big announcements coming up,” he said.

Can HPE turn as-a-service from the edge to the cloud into reality?

While digital adoption across the enterprise has obtained critical mass, in some cases the veneer of modernity hides decades of investment in legacy technology. Research shows that companies are struggling to transform their existing infrastructure.

In 2021, 82% of businesses reported being unable to undertake or complete critical digital transformation projects, with an average of $4.12 million spent on failed, delayed or scaled-back initiatives. Technological complexity and the well-documented skills gap, along with lack of buy-in, support or funding are preventing businesses from achieving the levels of scale and agility required to be competitive in the digital economy.

The simplest way for an enterprise to eliminate its legacy bottlenecks is infrastructure as a service. IaaS allows companies to hand over the expense and hassle of maintaining on-premises infrastructure to a cloud provider that provides virtual data center access through the cloud. HPE’s successful positioning of its IaaS platform GreenLake has made the company a three-peat leader in the primary storage market.

Part of the company’s strength comes from its legacy past. Unlike its cloud-native competitors, HPE has experience in where its customers are coming from, as well as where they need to go.

“[HPE] brings a lot of credibility, saying, ‘We understand the world you live in now, but we want to take you to that as-a-service future,’” Dion Hinchcliffe, vice president and principal analyst at Constellation Research Inc. recently told theCUBE.

GreenLake drives HPE earnings

As the cloud environment becomes increasingly complex, HPE’s promise to simplify everything as a service, from cloud to edge, is proving popular with its customer base.

“We are seeing persistent demand from our customers, underscoring both their IT spending prioritization and their attraction to our compelling portfolio,” said HPE President and Chief Executive Office Antonio Neri in the company’s Q2 2022 earnings call, released this week.

“Very strong customer demand in the second quarter drove orders growth higher, rising 20% year-over-year. Which makes this the fourth quarter in a row that HP has logged year-over-year orders growth of 20% or better,” Neri stated.

Crediting GreenLake for helping to drive this growth, Neri reported as-a-service orders doubled year-over-year for the third straight quarter of double-digit growth.

The expected HPE Discover 2022 announcements for additional GreenLake cloud services, along with secure connectivity, hybrid cloud, artificial intelligence and unified data analytics, show that HPE is investing more than marketing hype into its promise to provide customers with “data-first modernization across edge to cloud.”
