Grafana Labs enhancements aimed at reducing cloud-native complexity

The cloud-native world has experienced remarkable growth in just a short period of time.

Yet it is being forced to address a factor that could limit future success: The current path to entry can be challenging.

“For developers to get into cloud-native, there are maybe 10 tools at least which you have to be proficient in just to get started, which is honestly horrendous,” said Richard (Richi) Hartmann (pictured), community director at Raintank Inc., dba Grafana Labs. “We need to find new ways to compartmentalize this complexity back to human understandable levels again as we keep onboarding new people. This needs to change.”

Hartmann spoke with theCUBE industry analysts John Furrier and Savannah Peterson at the recent KubeCon + CloudNativeCon NA 2022, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed how the latest enhancements from Grafana Labs are designed to make cloud-native easier to use. (* Disclosure below.)

New Kubernetes interface

For its part, Grafana Labs is making an effort to lower the barrier to entry for developers interested in joining the cloud-native community. The company announced a collaboration with Isovalent Inc. in October that integrates the Cilium container networking interface for Kubernetes into the Grafana stack.

The result will make consistent observability across Kubernetes environments an easier process through use of familiar Grafana visualization tools.

“When we talk integration, we talk about things like a one-click experience,” Hartmann said. “You don’t have to reinvent the view for every single user.”

In recent months, Grafana Labs has also included a new dashboard panel in its Version 9 release that provided high-level histogram visualizations. Grafana streamlined the process for building visual queries without having to write in PromQL, which could involve a steep learning curve for many.

“Native histograms allow me to define a single formula,” Hartmann said. “With very little overhead, you get high-resolution histograms, which is really important for a lot of use cases. It just does what people expect it to do.”
