YellowDog and AMD weigh in on the importance of compute and cloud access

Hybrid cloud, where enterprises run some workloads on-premises and others in the cloud, is all the rage.

But given the vast number of instance permutations available, how can organizations pinpoint the most beneficial instance choice for their infrastructural needs?

“We really want to be able to make accessing the cloud, particularly at volume, to be simple and straightforward,” said Simon Ponsford (pictured, left), chief technology officer of YellowDog Ltd., a cloud workload management company. “The number of instance types available today from the major cloud providers is more than 7,000. Whereas on-prem, it’s already pretty easy. When you hit the cloud, you’ve just got this amazing amount of choice.”

Ponsford and Brad Smith (pictured, right), corporate vice president of sales, public cloud, at Advanced Micro Devices Inc., spoke with theCUBE industry analyst Savannah Peterson at the recent AWS re:Invent conference, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed the efficiency and performance factors enterprises must consider as they digitally transform, as well as the AMD/YellowDog partnership. (* Disclosure below.)

Helping orgs sift through an overwhelming choice

AMD’s enterprise customers rely on the company’s chips for powerful, cost-efficient compute resources. And its partnership with YellowDog highlights that commitment, especially given the prevailing economic uncertainties, according to Smith.

“It’s so important that you’re able to maximize your dollars and your spend with absolute certainty that you’ve got the right type of people behind you and that your dollars are being spent very wisely,” Smith stated. “And the great thing about YellowDog is that they have tremendous insight into cost optimization and compute optimization across the entire globe. Their index is quite remarkable.”

Now live, the YellowDog Index brings up every possible instance type available from the major cloud providers. The details include granular information, such as graphical processing unit (GPU) nodes, processor permutations and real-time pricing.

“It’s available for anyone to access,” Ponsford said. “You can just go to index.yellowdog.techand you’ll be able to see pretty much every single instance type that’s available from all the major cloud providers and be able to make your selection.”
