IBM and Cohesity partner to launch new data protection offering

IBM Corp. and Cohesity Inc. are teaming up to launch a new data protection offering, Storage Defender, that combines features from four different products.

The companies debuted the offering on Thursday.

Storage Defender will allow companies to create backups of their data and recover it after events such ransomware attacks. The platform can recover records that usually take hours or days to restore in a few minutes, IBM and Cohesity say. It’s set to include artificial intelligence features and will work with multiple types of data storage environments.

The first component of Storage Defender is Cohesity’s DataProtect platform. The platform enables administrators to create backups of data stored on-premises and in the cloud through a centralized interface. The backups DataProtect creates are so-called fully hydrated snapshots, which means they’re configured in a way that allows them to be restored more quickly than usual.

Cohesity provides a search bar to ease the snapshot restoration process. Using the search bar, administrators can quickly jump to a specific backup of a system and recover it. To help with large-scale data loss events, DataProtect offers the option to recover multiple files at once.

“Cohesity’s technology leadership position in data security and management, combined with IBM’s impressive storage portfolio, forward-looking vision, global reach, and client intimacy will allow clients to benefit from the best of Cohesity and IBM brought together,” said Cohesity Chief Executive Officer Sanjay Poonen.

The second component of the newly debuted Storage Defender offering is IBM’s own Storage Protect product. It’s a software tool that can back up physical file servers, virtual machines and other technology assets, as well as restore them. IBM says a single server equipped with Storage Protect can manage up to 4 petabytes of data, as well as ingest up to 100 terabytes’ worth of new information per day.

The two other products included in IBM Data Defender don’t focus specifically on data protection, but address it as part of their feature sets.

IBM’s Storage FlashSystem product series is a collection of flash and hybrid storage arrays designed for use in on-premises data centers. The array series includes a so-called logical air gap feature, FlashSystem Safeguarded Copy, that is designed to mitigate ransomware attacks. The feature allows companies to create a version of their data that can’t be deleted or modified by hackers in the event of a breach.

Customers of IBM and Cohesity’s new Storage Defender offering can use FlashSystem Safeguarded Copy to protect their records. They can also use the data protection features of Storage Fusion, the fourth component of the offering. It’s an IBM-developed software platform for managing the data of applications that run on Red Hat OpenShift.

Storage Defender is set to become available in the second quarter.
