Edge and AI are central focus in Dell’s recent PowerEdge server releases

The most recent updates to the server portfolio for Dell Technologies Inc. demonstrate a focus on artificial intelligence and machine learning at the edge.

Last year’s introduction of the edge-optimized Dell PowerEdge XR4000 was swiftly followed by the release of the XR5610, XR7620 and XR8000 servers, which included enhanced built-in AI capabilities for edge workloads.

“This is actually Dell’s largest server launch ever,” said Dave Lincoln (pictured, right), vice president of networking and emerging server solutions at Dell. “Since [SC22] in Dallas in November, we’ve started a rolling thunder of launches. We’re going to be announcing big investments in those parts of the market that are the growth segments of server, specifically AI and ML.”

Lincoln spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Lisa Martin and David Nicholson at MWC 2023, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. He was joined by Deania Davidson (left), director of edge server product planning and management at Dell, and they discussed key enhancements for the PowerEdge server line. (* Disclosure below.)

GPU acceleration support

Dell’s focus on edge and AI can be seen in its support for a wide range of enterprise-class GPUs. According to Dell, over 75% of its next-generation PowerEdge servers offer support for GPU acceleration.

“We did recognize obviously that AI was coming up so that’s in our XR7620 platform, and that does support two GPUs for edge inferencing,” Davidson said. “We’ve built the platforms, even though they’re small, to be able to handle the GPU power for customers.”

The addition of new servers to the existing XR lineup is also focused on meeting telco industry needs. The PowerEdge XR5610 and XR8000 models are built to support Open Radio Access Network or deployment environments, and that has been a direct result of key partnerships along the way.

“We understand that innovation is what’s going to deliver the most value for our customers,” Lincoln said. “One of the things Dell prides itself on is being able to deliver the world’s best innovation into the hands of our customers. Whether it’s working with our great partners like Intel, AMD and Broadcom, at the end of the day that is our core mantra.”
