Leveraging the cloud for high-performance computing: How Dell and Rescale are simplifying complexity
The scalability of the cloud has made it a catalyst for transformation in several advancing technologies, including high-performance computing.
What trends are accelerating the merging of cloud and HPC — especially for research and enterprise use cases?
“After the pandemic, the complexity of HPC became an important issue,” said Shervin Sammak (pictured, right), product manager at Dell Technologies Inc. “The value of the cloud here is that it provides flexibility for customers with data center issues ranging from cooling to powering the systems. We are seeing the cloud provides much more value in infrastructure procurement. You can start very small and then scale it as your business scales.”
Sammak and Andrew Lee (left), strategic channel and OEM business development at Rescale Inc., spoke with theCUBE industry analyst John Furrier at the ISC High Performance event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. Retrofitting the cloud for HPC
With the advent of artificial intelligence and machine learning, a lot of cloud-driven avenues have opened up for HPC use cases. Rescale specializes in making high-performance computing compatible with cloud capabilities, incorporating these cutting-edge capabilities, according to Lee.
“We do have some partnerships with all the hyperscalers as well,” he said. “But what’s unique is that it’s multicloud along with utilizing versatile infrastructure, and that allows scientific and engineering users to shift to the most optimal infrastructure of their choice.”
With multiple independent software vendors and tooling configurations to choose from, Rescale works with Dell Technologies’ HPC platform to recommend the optimal preconfigured stack for users, with the entire process powered by finetuned AI.
“What Rescale does is that we make it all very simple, in partnership with Dell, to have all of that preconfigured and pre-tuned through an AI-powered recommendation engine,” Lee explained. “That way, we can recommend the optimal stack for users.”
