Collaboration between AMD and HPE results in more sustainable technologies for enterprise IT

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. have partnered on a number of joint initiatives over the years, including finding new ways to support sustainable use of technology.

Seven years ago, HPE announced that it would increase the energy performance of its product portfolio by 30x. AMD quickly extended its support.

“When HPE set our 30x product performance improvement goal, AMD instantly reached out,” said John Frey (pictured, left), chief technologist, sustainable transformation, at HPE. “Customers … want to have denser architecture, maybe even manage those workloads on a small number of pieces of equipment. So how do we do that? We come in with next-generation architecture, higher core counts and we can actually cut the size of the hardware infrastructure required for the same workloads often by 50%.”

Frey spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Dave Vellante and Rob Strechay at HPE Discover during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. He was joined by John Hampton (right), senior director of worldwide customer field support at AMD, and they discussed the companies’ joint efforts to offer sustainable solutions. Leveraging chiplets

One of the methods employed by AMD to support more energy efficient technology is through chip design. Hampton brought a sample of AMD’s 4th generation EPYC chip to theCUBE’s HPE Discover set and provided additional insight in how the company leveraged chiplets, which subdivide a chip into smaller pieces, to achieve greater efficiency.

“These chiplets allow us to improve efficiency into the future,” Hampton said. “It’s really another level of innovation in how we design chips. This is going to allow us to take another step function improvement in sustainability in the future.”

The work by HPE and AMD in providing sustainable technology follows a trend in which customers are becoming more interested in what vendors are doing to reduce energy usage, according to Frey.

“Increasingly customers are asking companies they do business with about their ESG and sustainability programs,” Frey said. “We’ve got some emerging regulatory drivers in the EU and here in the U.S. that are going to bring a lot more focus on carbon emissions. Technology can be such an enabler to reduce those.”
