Revolutionizing enterprise search: How Elasticsearch and Cisco harness generative AI

Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing how we interact with and manage data, with generative AI especially rocketing innovation with its growing capabilities.

Elasticsearch B.V. is one of the several tech organizations harnessing the power of AI, with the company using the technology to revolutionize its enterprise search system, Elasticsearch Relevance Engine, or ERSE. The engine is currently being used by companies such as Cisco Systems Inc..

“If you think about a customer who’s still in the early phases of adopting something like semantic search, we just released our own pre-trained machine learning model,” said Kathleen Walker (pictured, left), senior director of product marketing at Elasticsearch. “That takes that burden completely off you. You can start enjoying the benefits of that without having to do the training yourself, but then also get the benefits of the increased relevance it can provide.”

Walker and Sujith Joseph (pictured), principal and chief enterprise search, AI and cloud architect/director at Cisco, spoke with theCUBE industry analysts John Furrier and Dustin Kirkland at the Google Cloud Next event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed how Elasticsearch is democratizing enterprise search, how Cisco adopted Elasticsearch into its infrastructure and the future of generative AI. (* Disclosure below.)

Artificial intelligence, genuine results

Cisco’s journey of integrating Elasticsearch into its enterprise search platform started during the pandemic. With Elasticsearch acting as the foundation search engine, Cisco built an ecosystem of components.

“For us, it is a humongous transformation where we move away from an on-prem Cisco data center into a cloud-native platform based out of Elasticsearch, as well as AI, and based on the foundation of Google Cloud,” Joseph said.

Although Elasticsearch seeks to capitalize on AI search capabilities, the company recognizes the potential scope of usefulness AI offers. With generative AI, Elasticsearch empowered their engineers to play around and experiment with the technology to see what they could create, beyond the search platform, according to Walker.

“We started getting some amazing blog content and articles coming out of the team that we’ve just been continuously dripping out to the market,” she said. “I see potential for us to use this in my part of the org to make my life easier.”
