Kong's Marco Palladino unpacks company's open-source AI gateway CLOUD

Kong expands API gateway availability on AWS with new dedicated cloud gateway

Application programming interface connectivity platform company Kong Inc. today announced the commercial availability of Kong Konnect Dedicated Cloud Gateway on Amazon Web Services.

The new service offers a streamlined approach to deploying global API management solutions with features such as zero-downtime upgrades, one-click deployment and scalable infrastructure, the company says.

Available exclusively via Kong Konnect, the company’s unified API platform, the new service is claimed to set a “new standard in simplicity” for deploying global, dedicated API management. Kong’s Cloud Gateway gives users the ability to establish a multicloud and multiregion distributed API management infrastructure, either at the edge or internally, with dedicated cloud resources.

Kong Konnect Dedicated Cloud Gateway for AWS harnesses the popular open-source software API service Kong Gateway. The integration offers seamless API management with uniform performance and facilitates the use of Kong Gateway’s extensive plugin library and custom plugins.

With the integration, users can also take advantage of Kong Konnect’s full lifecycle API management capabilities, including Gateway Manager, Mesh Manager, Service Hub, Developer Portal and Analytics. Users also gain access to Kong Konnect’s suite of offerings for enabling federated governance at scale for modern platform teams.

Key features include the ability to enable multicloud and multiregion deployment of API gateway infrastructure, facilitating deployment across various clouds and regions through a single click. The service supports both edge and internal APIs that allow for detailed configuration and enhanced security, irrespective of whether the APIs are deployed externally or internally.

Additionally, the platform offers Autopilot Mode for automatic scaling based on traffic, including prewarming capabilities to prevent downtime on initial requests and Custom Mode, which allows users to select specific resources and instance types for each region, ensuring cost predictability and resource optimization.

“We’ve combined our renowned modern, performant and extensible API technology with the ease of use of automatic scaling and no-downtime upgrades while also running on dedicated infrastructure for maximum performance and security, with support for private networking and a multicloud vision,” Marco Palladino (pictured), chief technology officer and co-founder of Kong, said ahead of the announcement.

At launch, Cloud Gateway is available on AWS across nine regions. Kong plans on expanding support to Microsoft Azure in the coming months and Google Cloud by the end of the year.
