Harnessing hybrid cloud solutions to transform the financial and recycling sectors

As hybrid cloud solutions gain traction globally, Ericsson is leading the charge in transforming both the financial services and recycling sectors.

Ericsson’s partnership with Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. demonstrates how hybrid cloud infrastructure can significantly enhance financial inclusion and promote sustainability. This collaboration highlights the importance of strong business partnerships in driving technological innovation and tackling some of the world’s most critical challenges.

HPE’s Hang Tan talks with theCUBE’s Rebecca Knight about hybrid cloud solutions.

“We are working with Ericsson on leveraging our portfolio of capabilities across the hybrid cloud stack to enable them to deliver services in a highly available, highly scalable manner that is very flexible, that is as-a-service based,” said Hang Tan (pictured, right), senior vice president of hybrid cloud at HPE. “We’re very excited to both provide the infrastructure and the software but also help advance the cause of financial inclusion and sustainability.”

Tan; Pavan Bachwal (left), sales manager of financial services at Ericsson; and Sophia Fahlen (center), head of Ericsson Connected Recycling, spoke with theCUBE’s Rebecca Knight at HPE Discover, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed how the collaboration between Ericsson and HPE utilizes hybrid cloud solutions to revolutionize financial services and recycling sectors. (* Disclosure below.)

Financial inclusion through digital wallets

Ericsson’s foray into the digital wallet space began over a decade ago with a primary focus on financial inclusion in the Middle East and Africa. The initial goal was to provide financial services to underbanked populations. This effort led to the development of the Ericsson Wallet Platform, a software solution now widely deployed across various markets, according to Bachwal.

“Through our journey, we realized that regulation and data and security are key principles to have a successful financial services deployment,” he said. “We industrialize a solution with HPE, from the switches to the stack, to the storages, to the rack. That is what has led us to the monumental growth, but also create a trust-based setup where our customers could then leverage our technology and create a massive ecosystem for themselves.”

A critical factor in the success of Ericsson’s financial services is its partnership with HPE. This collaboration has ensured that Ericsson’s solutions are scalable, secure and compliant with regulatory requirements. The trust-based ecosystem developed with HPE has enabled Ericsson to expand its financial services offerings significantly, Bachwal explained.

“When we started off, transfers and payments were the key drivers to grow the financial traffic,” he said. “As we took the evolutions, we saw use cases such as remittance, use cases such as merchant onboarding and payments, to today evolving to more advanced financial services. That has been a journey that we have seen over the decade that many of our customers have adapted to. It does not stop here. It’s going on to more advanced financial services as more growth happens in our solutions.”

Leveraging hybrid cloud solutions for sustainability

Recognizing the critical importance of sustainability, Ericsson has introduced the Ericsson Connected Platform. Unveiled at HPE Discover, the platform represents a significant step toward achieving a “world without waste,” where waste materials are viewed as valuable raw materials that can be recycled and traded, according to Fahlen.

“You don’t treat sustainability in an environment like a charity project that will sooner later to die,” she said. “You need to have it financially sustainable as well. That’s what we’re doing here. It’s not difficult because it is a raw material, it has value. You just need to connect the right actors in ecosystem and that’s what we do. We use digitalization, we use our source platform to make it widely available.”

The platform provides full traceability from waste material to new products, ensuring that materials are responsibly transacted, Fahlen explained. The process begins with helping customers — such as hotel chains, retailers and hospitals — understand how to segregate waste materials effectively. These materials are then connected to buyers through the platform, optimizing logistics and minimizing costs.

“We connect them through our platform into buyers of that material,” Fahlen said. “It needs to of course be consolidated. You need to optimize it for logistics so you don’t burn all your raw material revenue on logistics costs, but then you connect those to buying recyclers.”
