Amazon Web Services Inc. has introduced a new managed cloud-based game streaming service that allows game developers to deliver high-fidelity, low-latency experiences to players on virtually any device with a browser.
The service announced today called Amazon GameLift Streams is a new capability of Amazon GameLift, a purpose-built hosting service to build, host and scale multiplayer games. The new capacity adds the ability to stream the games to players who can start playing in seconds without waiting minutes or hours for downloads.
“With more than 750 million people playing games running on AWS every month, we have a long history of supporting the industry’s game development, content creation, player acquisition, personalization and more,” said Chris Lee, general manager and head of immersive technology at AWS.
Amazon said game developers can launch game streaming capability without investing millions of dollars into their infrastructure by using Amazon’s own fully managed graphics processor unit instances in the cloud. It requires little or no modification to the game code.
“In just a few clicks, developers can upload games built with any 3D engine to AWS and provision streaming capacity in specific AWS regions,” the company said in its announcement.
GameLift Streams comes with its own software development kit that eases the transition and assists with integrating existing identity services, storefronts, game loaders and websites. It also provides a dashboard for monitoring usage from within the AWS console that allows developers to scale streaming infrastructure across multiple regions to reach more players.
The service supports numerous operating systems and browsers including Windows, Linux and Proton runtimes and can run within Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Safari or any web browser enabled with the WebRTC open protocol. This ensures compatibility with the latest devices used by players including PC, mobile and smart TVs.
Aside from launching games in seconds, GameLift streaming provides the opportunity to allow users to play game demos instantly. This means game developers can reach audiences in moments who can partake of game experiences without an installation to get a “taste” of the gameplay before choosing to make a purchase.
Amazon GameLift is being used by several video game companies to provide streaming capabilities including Jackbox Games Inc., Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc., Ludeo Inc. and Xsolla Inc.
Jackbox is the developer of more than 50 hit party games over the past decade, such as “Quiplash Trivia,” “Murder Party,” “Fibbage” and “Qixort.” Although these games were designed to play on PC and consoles, using streaming technology they could reach a much broader audience using smart TVs and other devices.
GameLift is complimentary to Amazon’s cloud game streaming service Luna, which broadcasts games to users on Windows, MacOS, Fire TV, iOS and Android devices from a large number of publishers and developers.
