Quantum’s Latest Scaling Dedupe Heats Up Competition

Backup and recovery solutions provider Quantum announced it latest offering, the DXi4601 disk backup system.  It’s designed for relatively small deployments, and its selling point is that it doesn’t require a major and expensive upgrade to scale up in case the company that’s using it needs more capacity.

The basic version comes with four terabytes of memory, and a customer can use licensing keys to add an additional four terabytes of disk capacity at a time up to 12 TB. The offering also ships with RAID 6 storage protection, replication and support for the Symantec OpenStorage API. The company says that on top of saving a rack reconfiguration, the DXi4601 also offers more performance at a lower price than the competition.

“With DXi 2.0 software serving at its foundation, the DXi4601 achieves 1.7 TB/hour in-line deduplication performance across all capacity points, the fastest in its class. At an industry-leading price of $21,500 for a 4 TB system, its price-performance ratio is three to six times better than competitive offerings.”

The dedupe market is a very competitive one, and Permabit is the company that currently holds a benchmark performance record.  Its Albireo OEM embedded deduplication software delivers speeds somewhere along the line of 400GB per second, compared to 77GB/sec  the Enterprise Strategy Group Lab measured last year. Permabit is constantly fleshing  out its offering, and the firm is doing its best to capitalize on this approach.

Last month it unveiled a new API that allows Albireo to integrate with a very broad spectrum of offerings including SSDs, apps and operating systems.

In other news from the dedupe world, BridgeSTOR announced its Dedupe Card for Microsoft DPM 2010, which includes a data reduction processor built into a PCIe card and optimized software.
