Ubicquia raises $106M to expand AI-enabled infrastructure platform

Intelligent infrastructure solutions provider Ubicquia Inc. revealed today that it has raised $106 million in new funding to accelerate development of its artificial intelligence-enabled infrastructure solutions and expand direct sales efforts globally.

Founded in 2014, Ubicquia offers intelligent infrastructure platforms that attach to existing utility and municipal assets to collect, process and transmit operational data.

The company’s approach centers on embedding compact hardware modules directly onto streetlights, distribution transformers and other grid-connected equipment to allow for real-time monitoring without requiring full infrastructure replacement. The model addresses the operational challenge utilities and cities face in gaining granular visibility into distributed assets that were not originally designed for digital monitoring.

Ubicquia’s platform combines edge devices, wireless communications and a cloud-based software environment with field-installed modules that contain sensors and communications components that capture power quality, voltage, current and environmental data. Gathered data is transmitted over mobile networks or other network connections to centralized systems where it is aggregated and analyzed.

The platform’s architecture supports remote configuration, firmware updates and data management to allow operators to integrate field intelligence into existing utility or municipal management systems. Ubicquia’s solutions include distribution grid monitoring, streetlight management and public safety applications. The system can detect anomalies such as voltage irregularities, outages and transformer-level disturbances to facilitate event identification and maintenance workflows, lighting control, dimming schedules and energy reporting.

Ubicquia’s technology is used by electric utilities, telecommunications providers and city governments and leverages existing poles and lighting infrastructure to host edge devices, reducing the need for new construction. The company has more than 1,000 customers, including large cities and utilities. Notable customers include the San Diego Police Department, Digital Lighting Networks Inc., UScellular Corp., the Orlanado Utlities Commision and Next Level Energy Services LLC.

The Series D funding round was led by 67 Capital and Marunouchi Innovation Partners Inc., with existing investors Hamilton Lane Inc., ClearSky Security, GMS Inc. and strategic partner Sercomm Corp. also participating.

“Ubicquia stands out for its ability to turn existing urban and utility infrastructure into AI-enabled networks that deliver immediate operational and financial value,” said Cort Ahl, a partner at 67 Capital. “Their traction with utilities, municipalities and commercial customers demonstrates they are defining the next generation of intelligent infrastructure and we believe they are positioned to become the category leader globally.”

The new funding takes the total raised by Ubicquia to approximately $232 million, based on data from Tracxn.
