VMware Pairs Virtualization with Mobile Growth

In addition extending its virtualization ecosystem on the enterprise side, EMC subsidiary VMware is also working on developing a solid end-user portfolio centralized on mobile.

Joe Baguley, VMware’s Chief Cloud Technologist, discussed this approach and his outlook during his opening keynote of day 2 of the NetEvents 2011 EMEA Summit entitled “IT’s All In The Clouds.” Speaking to a global crowd from over a dozen nations, Baguley said desktops will become obsolete in the future and instead hosted on the public cloud.

“Baguley talked about how virtualisation in the cloud will change how everyone works. One of his main points was that in future the desktop operating system will be pulled apart as its various elements — memory, disk and CPU – are pushed into the cloud.”

Baguley also said, in reply to NetEvents editorial director Manek Dubash that this will become more possible in the future when cloud infrastructure will become more reliable. However the prospect he outlined will likely not be spared by the what-if scenarios that are already affecting services such as AWS; especially if there will be wide-spread adoption. The virtual desktop market is still a relatively small one, but several companies including VMware competitor Citrix and Pano Logic are hauling in new users.

VMware is also working on its own VDI initiative for mobile devices, though it has a lot of catching up. It also released a number of apps after a string of acquisitions which have been doing well so far.  The firm’s SlideRocket and Socialcast apps got a facelift late last month with improved security and collaboration features.

Back in the enterprise space, VMware had an update today. Global Knowledge announced “VMware vSphere: Fast Track,” an extended version of the VMware vSphere 5 training course.
