Apple iPhone 4S Sales vs Samsung Galaxy S II

We’re so used to hearing about Apple and Samsung battling it out in court, but there’s another battle brewing that we have to watch out for: the battle of device sales.

When Apple officially launched the iPhone 4S in stores last Friday, people were predicting that sales over the weekend could actually reach $4 million.  But Apple beat everyone’s expectations as they sold over four million units.   Multiply that with the price of the device and you’d get unbelievable results; way over the expected $4 million revenue.  This is associated to the fact that in the US alone, the iPhone 4S is available on three of the biggest networks, which means the Apple device is available to more consumers.  Also, the iPhone 4S was also sold in six other countries aside from the US.  Sales are expected to go even higher, as they are set to offer the newest iPhone to 22 other countries by October 22.

“iPhone 4S is off to a great start with more than four million sold in its first weekend–the most ever for a phone and more than double the iPhone 4 launch during its first three days,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior VP of worldwide product marketing in a statement. “iPhone 4S is a hit with customers around the world, and together with iOS 5 and iCloud, is the best iPhone ever.”

Since the debut of the iOS 5, over 25 million iOS users updated their devices to iOS 5 and iCloud already has 20 million new customers.  How’s that for a great start?

As for Samsung, they’re not about to let Apple take center stage.  They’ve announced some impressive numbers as well.   Samsung reported that the combined sales of their Galaxy S and SII reached a total of total 30 million global sales.  It’s a figure that isn’t limited to just this past weekend, but it provides a point of comparison nonetheless.

The Galaxy SII is Samsung’s fastest selling device, which already sold 10 million units in just a few months.  The Galaxy also recently received five out of the total ten Mobile Choice Consumer Awards 2011 in the UK as well as the 2011 Gadget Award for being chosen as the best smartphone of the year by T3.   The Galaxy S accumulated 20 million units sold since its launch in 2010, which makes it the highest selling device in Samsung’s portfolio, as well as another record-breaker for the company and the mobile market.

“Since its launch only five months ago, Galaxy SII has seen tremendous sales success and garnered enthusiastic reviews from consumers and mobile industry watchers across the globe. This is in addition to the continued sales momentum behind Galaxy S, which we launched at Mobile World Congress 2010 as continues to be a run-away success with consumers,” said JK Shin, President and Head of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business.

“The phenomenal success of these smartphones once again demonstrates how the GALAXY S smartphones is setting the standard for smart mobile technology around the world.”

Samsung is now the largest Android smartphone vendor and the second largest phone vendor globally.

Both companies presented jaw-dropping numbers but if Apple maintains or even surpass their performance over the weekend when they launch in other countries, they could easily beat Galaxy SII’s sales.
