Cloud games platform provider Weeby.co acquires Vietnamese social app Tappy

Cloud-based social games platform provider Weeby.co, Inc. has acquired Vietnamese social location-based app provider Tappy Pte. Ltd. for an undisclosed sum.

Founded in August 2014, Tappy offers a hyperlocal social app that is said to transform any location into a virtual online community where users can discover interesting people and relevant content.

The company says it focuses in creating a social network beneficial to both consumers and businesses and includes promotions for “exciting events” in a users’ local area.

According to Tech in Asia, who broke the news, the acquisition is a buyout to provide Weeby.co a base in which to expand its social games platform into Asia.

“I spent years creating at least 40 games and apps. The mobile gaming business is basically a hit-and-miss; it’s ridiculously hard for any small game studio to compete with big companies for top chart positions on the App Store” Founder Thuy Truong is quoted as saying. “Weeby.co’s Producer is exactly what smaller studios need – it’s a game changer for the industry. I’m very excited to be a part of bringing this product to hands of developers and studios around Asia and globally.”

Chief Executive Officer of Weeby.co Michael Carter added that “By acquiring Tappy and bringing on board the management team, we’re jumping forward half a decade in business and strategic partnerships. The region is one of the fastest growing on the planet.”

Based in Mountain View, CA, and a spin-off of Game Closure, Inc., Weebly offers an “automatic game studio in the cloud” that allows users to create game engines, games, servers, graph data / matching algorithms, and developer & artist tools.

Prior to acquisition Tappy has raised one seed round of $200,000 from Thuc Vu and Dave McClure’s 500 Startups.

Weeby.co has a little bit more money in the bank, having raised $12 million in one round post its spinoff from Game Closure from investors including like Highland Capital Partners, StartX, SV Angel, Matt Ocko and Joi Ito.

As part of the deal, the Tappy team including co-founders Leslie Ngan Nguyen and Thuc Vu will be relocating to Singapore.
